Kodi v18 Leia RC1 - A new hope
Der Releae Candidate von Kodi ist raus. Da werde ich wohl zu Weihnachten einige Tests damit machen. Unter anderm mit
Because the GPL and closed source binary blobs aren't compatible, we can't ship them along Kodi. What we can do is use them to play DRMed content if they are present on your system. Combine that with a specific provider add-on and you could access Netflix, HBO Go or your favorite legit content provider from inside Kodi.

Kodi v18 Leia RC1 - A new hope

After two years of hard work by all volunteers, either part of the team or of our great community we can finally say the last steps towards Kodi v18 are being made. In past years many things have changed, either visually or code wise and to be honest i can't even recall most. We as team would certainly like to thank every developer and user who ...

WOW.

This page here: https://bridge.suumitsu.eu/

Creates #Feeds of many webpages, just pick one and use the feed, it can do #RSS, #Atom, #JSON and more.

The page is just one that uses the #FLOSS project here: https://github.com/RSS-Bridge/rss-bridge

I am just amazed by this, they parse webpages and create feeds or use other available sources.

Despite the fact that the #gpl licenses are more restrictive than the #bsd and #mit licenses, the corporations prefer use the #gpl, especially version 2, them learned to use the gpl to defend themselves primarily from (ironically) the community and to bully the smaller companies.

One thinks for a corporation the BSD is a better option but how many are the relevant projects based on bsd and that have never released the source code? For me are very few, for example I can only remember the Playstation OS.

#gpl3 is better than gpl2 and for that reason is avoided from the most of the commercial entities. Since the moment that the gpl has been distorted and has been used to sell closed services on top of gpl software I am starting to think that bsd might be a better license than gpl.

I heard an interview of a kernel dev of Freebsd and as well an interview of Redox creator and both point the fact that are interested in computer science not in legal issues, mit and bsd licenses eliminate those issues; from the other side Torvalds said the who cares for its code uses a gpl and #rms is above any suspects.

Those are free thoughts without any willing to breakthrough the truth but as a matter of fact, apparently, it seems that the bsd/mit licenses are lesser abused or distorted than the gpl ones. As matter of fact you can't do any abuse with a bsd/mit license but as any kind of software is in constant development corporations prefer defending its investment with the gpl so eventually if you want really make a project free of any abuse bsd/mit licenses are, paradoxically, better since the moment the corporations can take for free your job but them can't or won't afford the development them prefer avoid these very permissive licenses.

What do you think?

QubesOS

Bild/Foto
Bild/Foto

How does Qubes OS provide security?

Qubes takes an approach called security by compartmentalization, which allows you to compartmentalize the various parts of your digital life into securely isolated compartments called qubes.

This approach allows you to keep the different things you do on your computer securely separated from each other in isolated qubes so that one qube getting compromised won’t affect the others. For example, you might have one qube for visiting untrusted websites and a different qube for doing online banking. This way, if your untrusted browsing qube gets compromised by a malware-laden website, your online banking activities won’t be at risk. Similarly, if you’re concerned about malicious email attachments, Qubes can make it so that every attachment gets opened in its own single-use disposable qube. In this way, Qubes allows you to do everything on the same physical computer without having to worry about a single successful cyberattack taking down your entire digital life in one fell swoop.

Moreover, all of these isolated qubes are integrated into a single, usable system. Programs are isolated in their own separate qubes, but all windows are displayed in a single, unified desktop environment with unforgeable colored window borders so that you can easily identify windows from different security levels. Common attack vectors like network cards and USB controllers are isolated in their own hardware qubes while their functionality is preserved through secure networking, firewalls, and USB device management. Integrated file and clipboard copy and paste operations make it easy to work across various qubes without compromising security. The innovative Template system separates software installation from software use, allowing qubes to share a root filesystem without sacrificing security (and saving disk space, to boot). Qubes even allows you to sanitize PDFs and images in a few clicks. Users concerned about privacy will appreciate the integration of Whonix with Qubes, which makes it easy to use Tor securely, while those concerned about physical hardware attacks will benefit from Anti Evil Maid.

Bye #Telfie. Is it possible to create a decentralised and/or distributed Telfie type software?

#Telfie bids farewell. Before them, #GetGlue / #TVtag also bid farewell. Maybe it is time to do a #FLOSS / #FOSS implementation that is #DDFON? That is, "decentralised, distributed, federated, open, network".

What do you think?

Write Freely, the open source federated blogging platform, has just got its first release:

https://github.com/writeas/writefreely/releases/tag/v0.1.0

The official Write Freely site is here:

https://writefreely.org/

If you just want to sign up for a blog, try the project’s original instance at https://write.as

Write Freely federates with ActivityPub so you can follow its blogs from the fediverse. The platform looks very minimalist and clean, the idea is to focus on the text rather than the layout.

There should be an official launch announcement soon by the official blog at https://blog.writefreely.org/

Notes just before breakfast: I really *got* to get thoughts sorted relating to #FLOSS, cloud computing, privacy and innovation. Currently feeling a bit lost between rejecting large platforms for the sake of keeping personal data somehow "safe" - and actually embracing them because, even in the #FLOSS world with all the Unix heritage, we *always* thought it is a good idea to stand on the shoulder of giants rather than re-inventing the whell all over and over again... 😐 Thoughts welcome.

Congrats and thx to everyone involved.
For me this anniversary means: 15 years and 2 or 3 months ago I decided to learn more about #Linux and #FLOSS by starting to contribute to the #Fedora project.

My (bad) experience with #Technoethical

First the good things:
- you get #librehardware
- preinstalled with a linux-libre distro
- they donate some money to #floss projects

The bad things:
- waiting weeks for email answers
- delivery takes weeks longer
- hardware isn't fully working as specified
- hw is partly not the specified one
- negative reviews will not be released on their website

If you thinking about buying libre hardware, there are also some other shops available, don't pratfall on this company.

Decentralized #Communication Survey

Wow that title just sounds boring. But I swear, this is exciting (and super important!) stuff. I'm starting up a project comparing all the #secure, #private, #FLOSS / #FOSS #socialnetworks, #apps, #programs and similar services out there. Updates will be published live on https://gitlab.com/qqn/dctrl. I'm merging a recent blockchain SN survey stemming from my research into cryptocurrency, an old decentralized SN analysis, the EFF's (outdated) Secure Messaging Scorecard (and its quasi-update), all in with current Federation/Fediverse services.

I've really just started work on this today and there's a lot to push forward with. I'm now looking for more services and characteristics for comparison. My goal is twofold: to come up with a solid list of top contenders to recommend for universal, safe communication, and to encourage these "winners" to start communicating with each other. Contributors welcome! I'm working with hackers from #Vancouver's wonderful DCTRL community as well as with several fellow students from the University of #Nicosia's Digital Currency MSc... @Dennis Schubert, @herzmeister der welten, @Dafe, @Senya, @Jason Robinson OLD ACCOUNT, @Katharina Nocun, @Sean Tilley, , @Pistos and @Garidin Winslow are just a few from Diaspora/Friendica who quickly come to mind who might be interested in helping : ). The challenge:

Install F-Droid on your mobile device.

What is F-Droid?

F-Droid is an app store containing only #free and #opensouce applications. It has several nice features. For example, it respects your #privacy (apart from the official app store it does not require you to login to any account, etc.), itt also warns you if the app has some anti-feature or some known #security issue.

How to install F-Drioid?
1. Download the latest apk from the official F-Droid website: https://f-droid.org.
2. Copy the apk file to your device.
3. Allow installing apps from "unknown sources" at the security settings.
4. Run the apk file by opening it using a file manager.
5. Enjoy your new privacy-respecting free-software app store.

So I found this job offer today: Junior Applications Developer

When I saw the requirements, under the voice "Application Environment", I found this:
  • We are a proud Microsoft shop. FOSS/Linux evangelists need not apply.
Oh my goodness… 😦

This is the most unprofessional requirements I have ever seen, first because using #microsoft for web stuff (and all the rest) is highly unproductive, second because it is stupid as is. It would be stupid even the contrary.

By the way, there is nothing to be proud being a micro$oft shop…

The free libre open source analytics software Matomo (formerly known as Piwik) is now on the fediverse:

@Matomo

They also have a website:

https://matomo.org/

The software costs nothing if you self-host, and they also offer a paid hosted option for people who prefer it.

Unlike Google Analytics, Matomo's data stays entirely on the site that uses it. No one else has access to it, so there's no way for it to be aggregated across many sites.

It respects "Do not track" and has a wide range of privacy options to let site owners gather only the minimum required data.

Признаться, я не хотел в это всё влазить, но мне пришлось.
Open source

Recent DEV Branch Updates
If you think development of Hubzilla is at a standstill just because Mike is churning out some awesome code for Osada and Zap, you haven't been paying close enough attention!

Things certainly aren't sitting still! There has been quite a bit of activity on the /dev branch of core as well as updates to addons. Here's just a brief recap of some of the things that have been done in preparation for the next release of Hubzilla:

* "Appification" of various features. - The Appification effort has been led by @Mario Vavti and he's been doing a great job! In addition to keeping up with merge requests from other developers, Mario has converted quite a number of FEATURES into SYSTEM APPS. This does mean significant UI changes, including a new structure for settings. As features become apps, it may be necessary to "install" additional apps to your channel in order to access things. For example, recently the Privacy Groups were "appified" requiring channel owners to install the "Privacy Groups" app in order to access privacy groups filtering. A BIG THANK YOU to Mario for this important work!
* Translations, Translations, Translations - @Max Kostikov has been hard at work trying to keep up with changes to make sure Hubzilla is multi-lingual and easy to maintain. He has been making sure that things that may need translation are coded to make them easy to translate. You can help in the translation effort! Ask on the Dev channel how to get started! We can make sure Hubzilla is a truly international tool. THANK YOU Max for your continued work on making this possible!
* Database Updates - A database update was applied to the DEV branch on September 28 to rename the groups tables. Mysql8 has added reserved words which conflict with Hubzilla's group table name requiring the change. Thanks @Max Kostikov for submitting the changes for Hubzilla.
* More Hooks - Various hooks in order to allow addon developers to do additional processing or filter various default lists have been added by .
* Removal of "techlevels" - With the appification project well underway and the ability to hook into the core and write apps to filter various UI items, tech-levels became an unnecessary complication and the code logic implementing them has been removed.
\* The brains behind Hubzilla, Osada, Zap, and everything Zot has been working at breakneck speed on ZAP and OSADA - the latest social-media centric ZOT applications which are coming along nicely. But he has still found time to provide ongoing updates and patches to Hubzilla as well as direction and guidance to the other developers. The biggest THANK YOU goes to without whom none of this would be possible.

JOIN THE FUN! There are plenty of things that can be done. Documentation, translation, UI, testing, and many other things.

If someone would like to help by putting together periodic summaries like these, that would be GREAT! Drop me a note and let me know!

Friclicli status update: More UI and README

I have added more UI parts to friclicli and the frame of a main window with keybindings for the navigation is now available. Furthermore I added a very basic README file with compiling instructions and an explaination why friclicli is developed.

--------

About the project:

Friclicli will (hopefully) be a CLI based client for the decentralised social network Friendica. It is written in C and licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v3. The source code is available on GitLab:

The Rainbow Illusion by Pixelfed

I don’t wish to start this brief entry with a headline as the new floss alternative that wants to kill x proprietary service, because it’s already a topic quite used and, in my opinion, it does not contribute anything new to the debate.

I’ve always believed that it’s not about killing or being the only mass option. For me, if there would be a free software alternative to do anything, this must be understood as a different way of seeing the world, conceiving it and acting on it, far from other logics that are certainly prevailing and more popular.

Publishing on Pixelfed

A couple of months ago, it was announced on Mastodon, another social network attempt, but focused at sharing images,as a Instagram-like, but with the features of operating under software that federates which could mean to allow that each person to create their own server, besides the possibility of examining or not the software on which the service runs.

Now the test server opened the doors and it seems that the first two weeks have shown that this software has a promising future.

For now, it is in a closed beta status, which means that the records are opened every so often; as also that the software is in continuous improvement, which means that it lacks many features; as for example, modifying avatar, what it’s impossible right now.

The (brief) Story behind Pixelfed

Osorno Volcano, Chile

A couple of months ago, when a lone developer from Alberta, Canada, called @dansup started working on this new social network; perhaps, inspired by the success achieved by Mastodon; added to the fact that the majority of the software of this one was completely well documented as well as that the Protocol on which it is based was transformed into a W3C recommendation.

For now, the development is moving at a good pace; improving the UI every week, and allowing the integration of new features, improving the size of the images; of the text that is possible to publish next to them, among others.

Profiles and User Interface

1. Avatar

The avatar is not modifiable at the moment. It is randomly assigned by the software and consists of drawings with circular patterns

2. Number of Publications, Followers and Following Accounts

It does not deserve much explanation.
