Reddit's Linux post for the day: "Switching To Linux Has Made Gaming.. More Fun?"

OP: "Am I the only one who has found PC gaming is actually more fun on Linux?

How would having less games to choose from be more fun right? And why would games be any more or less fun to play on a different OS?

It kinda sounds illogical, but weirdly that's been my experience.

Last year while I was still on Windows, I was increasingly feeling bored of gaming and had a total lack of interest in the games available. I wasn't seeing much that looked particularly appealing to me."

I do not see many new post here, so I decided to post a random question to create some activity.

Which game impressed you the most with its story depth and why?

I myself was very impressed by Syberia (the first and the second one), and I carry a special sentiment for this game as it was one of my first games. Because of imaginative world building and its mysterious charm, the game has a special place in my heart, despite its obvious flaws.

Interesting view on the use of the word 'Community' (geared towards gaming)

I've always been hesitant to call myself a member of any community, if only because invariably, there are members of that community that share views that are different than my own, and calling myself a member paints me with that same brush. There are many views- both good and bad- wrapped up in any conglomeration of people. And when you get to online identities, you have to deal with the fact that you might not be looking at someone's true face.

I play Video and Computer Games but am not a member of that community. I play RPGs and Board Games but am not a member of that community. I'm into Mechanical Keyboards but am not a member of that community. And so on, and so on. Dealing with people on an individual level has always been my go to. Not to make assumptions for the good nor the bad.

This blog post summarizes a lot of thoughts that I'd had more eloquently than I could ever have written them.

Google Stadia uses a custom AMD chip to offer 10.7 teraflops of cloud gaming power

The beauty of a cloud gaming service is two-fold: 1) you can theoretically play any game, anywhere you’ve got a good enough internet connection to stream it over the net, and 2) even if you’re playing it on a wimpy smartphone, you can harness the power of a beefy server located in a data center.

But what kind of server matters a whole heck of a lot when it comes to graphical fidelity and keeping the service affordable, given how many players may be using those servers at a given time — and it turns out that Google’s just-announced Stadia cloud gaming service may have struck a balance between power and price by partnering with AMD for a new custom piece of silicon.

According to Google, each Stadia server will contain a custom x86 processor running at 2.7GHz, 16GB of RAM, and most importantly a custom AMD GPU capable of 10.7 teraflops of performance. (They’re running Linux, not Windows, which may matter when Google tries to attract game developers.)

Which is all fine but why do I suspect the Internet link may be a bottleneck and we do... mehr anzeigen

The Linux-powered game console Atari VCS: upgraded to AMD Ryzen.

It will additionally be using Radeon Vega graphics and not Radeon R7 which it was previously.

It seems they've been working with AMD on this, as the APU they're going to be using apparently has yet to actually be announced officially by AMD. From what they say it will be a 14nm, with two Zen CPU cores.

As a result of the changes, they said the North American schedule for delivering the final product has been pushed back until the end of 2019.

So I heard of this from somewhere and finally got the trial going for Lilia (my 8 yo). She's absolutely loving it. The interface is really nice and easy to use and the mixing of game building and light coding is a great idea (with the cute characters of course). Nice to see her building her own platformer levels <3

Will share some games once she gets more advanced :D Also nice that it builds (like Scratch) this culture of #opensource and sharing. She was already enthusiastically telling me how she played a level made by some random person and then started tweaking it and how cool that was.

After a free week trial, it's $7 per month, but well worth it I think.

Turns out Richard (Levelord) Gray, level designer of Duke Nukem and some other legendary games lives in Moscow.

He spent most of his life in the US and moved to his wife and daughter a few years ago. His levels were masterpieces and it is especially appreciated by anyone who tried to make a level myself (I did). It is not just putting things together so they look nice - it is all about atmosphere, playability and fucking with the player's mind just enough to entertain and make it challenging. Make it too hard and it will seem like a purposeless series of gotchas making it less of a game and more of memory and fingers training. Make it too straightforward and at best it will be like a movie players watch and yawn in the end.

And tech was limiting these days. For example, Duke Nukem 3D wasn't really 3D - everything had to be on the same plane. You couldn't have two floors and go between them. But they managed to have multiple floors anyway in some levels. E.g. you "fell" into a hole but actually you stepped on invisible teleport and it took you "below" - actually it... mehr anzeigen

I see a lot of these types of videos trending on Youtube -- the kind of videos that are meant to be nostalgic, usually involving some memory of playing Minecraft and watching Let's Play videos -- and I can't really relate to the nostalgia because 10 years ago just doesn't seem that significant to me as it would be to the young adults nowadays. Afterall, playing Minecraft and watching Let's Play videos 10 years ago was just another day in college for me; but for these young adults today who would have just been young kids 10 years ago, the same activities were significantly more important in their lives.

I don't remember when the events of daily life became so insignificant, and my goals in life began to take preference, but I wonder how the kids today will feel the same once they too grow older.

I need to get back into tabletop RPGs. I've not played an RPG since sometime around 2012 and have not had a regular RPG group for several years before that.

I miss it.

There are 4 or 5 gaming stores within 30 minutes of here (Dayton, OH area). I guess I need to go visit them and see what my options are. Not super excited about that, since I really don't want to buy into D&D 5 or Pathfinder... I'd rather find a game using something I already own like D&D 3.5 or 4, TSR Marvel (FASERIP), the original Deadlands, old-school Cthulhu or ShadowRun, GURPS, or Numenera.
