I like that you can rename people you follow here on #Friendica. There are some people who like to have ridiculous display names. Looking at you @Leo Brown

The federated social network #Friendica has just released its new version 2019.01, which now includes full #ActivityPub support:

https://github.com/friendica/friendica/releases/tag/2019.01

Thanks to ActivityPub, it federates with Mastodon, PixelFed, Pleroma, PeerTube, NextCloud Social, Osada, Hubzilla etc.

Friendica also still has federation with #Diaspora, so if you're wanting to follow ActivityPub accounts without leaving your Diaspora friends, Friendica might be a good option.

Friendica 2019.01 released
We are pleased to announce the availability of Friendica The Tazmans Flax-lily 2019.01, which bundles up our work since September 2018. This includes over 130 fixed issues and some exciting new features. If you are interested in all of them, please have a look at the CHANGELOG file.

Most noteworthy of these changes are:
  • Friendica does now natively support ActivityPub (AP) in addition to the DFRN, diaspora* and OStatus protocols. The AP functionality was tested with Hubzilla, Mastodon, Nextcloud Social, Osada, PeerTube, Pixelfed and Pleroma.
  • The configuration structure has changed again! Your old .htconfig.php and config/local.ini.php file will still work, but you will get a notification in the admin panel with some hopefully explaining text on how to convert your settings to the new config/local.config.php config file.
  • The manual and automatic installation process was enhanced.
Thanks everyone who has made this release possible. Your work is much appreciated!

Please note, that this will be the last version of Friendica supporting PHP 5.6.

How to Update

If you are updating from an older version then the 2018.09 release, please first update your Friendica instance to that version as there were several important changes in that version.

Please further note, that since Friendica 3.6 we use composer for dependency management. If you are updating via git, you have to remember to update the dependencies as well.

Pre-Update Procedures

Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently. While testing, we did not encounter problems, but better save than sorry.

Using the Archive files

If you had downloaded the source files in an archive file (zip or tar.gz) please download the current version of the archive from GitHub (friendica-full-2019.01.tar.bz2 and friendica-addons-2019.01.tar.gz and unpack it on your local computer.

As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.

The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2019.01 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.

Please be aware of the changes in the configuration format. You should follow the instructions linked from your admin panel as soon as possible to move your configuration to the new location.

Using git

Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository. Remember to also update the dependencies with composer.
cd friendica
git pull
bin/composer.phar install
cd addon
git pull
If you want to switch the branch (e.g. if you helped testing the RC code) please do so after the pull using git checkout.

How to Contribute?

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with git(hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Thanks again everyone who helped making this release possible and have fun!

Hi, with the 2019.01-rc version, what's the minimal level of logging required in order to be able to log authentication and use fail2ban?

Sharing Photos In Private Posts

When you share public posts, photos are transferred to users of other systems along with the text of the post. Occasionally a photo gets lost along the way, but that's no issue with authentication, but with federation.

Things change, when you share a private post with photos.

On Diaspora you can have EXIFs automatically removed from your photos in the settings section. You always upload a photo into a specific post. The photo is assigned a link and the photo is public. Yet the link to a photo contains a long string of random characters, so the photo is hard to find.

Friendica and Hubzilla have photo albums. So users can upload photos into posts or into photo albums. That means the access to a post and the access to photos are controlled independently. Friendica and Hubzilla also do not automatically remove EXIFs from photos. Depending on your settings EXIFs can reveal the time the photo was taken, the camera model and the location. EXIFs can be removed before uploading a photo.

If a friendica or Hubzilla user uploads a photo into a private post, the access to the photo will be private too. Unfortunately that doesn't work across networks. If a friendica user makes a private post with a private photo, Hubzilla and Diaspora users will see the text of the post, but will only see a placeholder instead of the photo. It's the same for Hubzilla users sending to friendica and Diaspora.

So what can Hubzilla or friendica users do, if they want to share a private post with a photo across the network?

They can upload the photo first and make it public, then the photo can be seen by anyone looking at their photo albums in their account. That may be fine if the photo shows something mundane that only becomes personal in the context of the post. They can upload the photo to some other place (Nextcloud, own website, PixelFed,...) and embed it into their private post. That means the photo will not show up in the albums of the account.

Hubzilla users can make their private post with photos accessible with a guest access token. That means they create a link that allows access to their channel and shows the private post with photos to anyone who has the link. They can set that guest access token to expire after a certain time. I have used this option and I think it's one of the coolest features of Hubzilla. The photos remain private and even if the link ends up in the wrong place, the access to the post has a time limit as an additional safety feature. In addition the token links to the channel, which means one will see all public posts and the private post(s) that are allowed with the token. In other words a visitor will end up looking at news and flower photos, scrolling, and not knowing what to look for unless he got some info what the post is supposed to be about and how old it is. If the token has expired, the post in question will just have vanished. All the other posts will still be there.

#Verb

Sharing Across Platforms

If you are on Diaspora and you want to get some other user's public posts, you add the contact. If someone else wants to get your posts, she adds you as a contact. You will then be notified and can decide, if you add that contact as well or not. You can sort your contacts into aspects and share private post with some some aspects, but not others. It is not obvious, if the other user is on Diaspora, friendica or Hubzilla. The name of his server might be an indication, that's all. Once someone follows you, she remains on your contact list. There is no way for you to remove her. Over time your contact list therefore gets cluttered with contacts who have stopped using their accounts long ago.

If you want to get someone's public posts you add that user to your contacts. You get to see the profile of the user, if you like, the page with the public posts before you add the user, so you know which platform he uses. You will get to see a Diaspora user's public posts, after you add him. A Hubzilla user gets to decide which permissions you are granted, just like you can grant various, detailed permissions to other users from any platform. A Diaspora user can follow you back which gets the Hubzilla user a standard set of permissions - or not.

A friendica user can decide to accept a contact as mutual friendship, only allow you to see his posts without seeing yours or ignore your request altogether. If a contact request is ignored, the Hubzilla user will get the same symbol she gets when a Diaspora user doesn't follow back. A friendica user can also see which system his contacts use.

I think being able to add a user to my contacts while not allowing his posts in my stream is very useful. I use my Diaspora and Hubzilla accounts for different content. I have people following both accounts, because they want to see both types of content. But I don't need to see their posts twice. I can still share private posts with those contacts on both platforms.

Friendica and Hubzilla users can sort their contacts into groups which are similar to the aspects of Diaspora.

Friendica and Hubzilla users can remove contacts. The removed contacts will no longer receive any of their posts then. When I removed my Hubzilla and Diaspora account from the friendica account's contacts, the friendica account was still shown as working in their contact lists. I had to remove the friendica account from the other two accounts as well and then reconnect all three of them to show the connections correctly.

First of all a user has to create an account. If you don't have a recommendation already, it's difficult to decide where to sign up.

Should you consider signing up for an(other) account these two lists help, although the information isn't necessarily up to date or complete.

https://the-federation.info/

https://podupti.me/

Diaspora: There are quite a few well maintained pods that accept registrations from anyone.

Friendica: There are some well maintained pods that accept registrations from anyone. Features vary a lot.

Hubzilla: There are few hubs that accept registrations from anyone. Many hubs are used by the owner with family and friends only.

Who you first "meet" after signing up depends on the server you have chosen. Diaspora and friendica have public streams that show all posts and comments that somehow ended up on that server. Hubzilla can have a public stream. My Hubzilla server doesn't.

When you sign up to a server with lots of users the public stream is probably crazy busy. I don't really know, because I haven't done that. I was interested in the experience of a decentralized network and there isn't much decentralization, if we all hang out in the same place, I thought. So I first signed up to a pod that had very few users then. I wondered, if there was much of a network at all. I wrote a newhere post and learned ther was and I have been fascinated with how this whole thing works ever since.

Friendica and Hubzilla have user directories that you can search by name or tag to find people to connect with. They show more information about users than the search for a username or tag on Diaspora, if the profile shows up.

I did a search for my own profiles on all three accounts: Diaspora shows all three profiles. Hubzilla didn't find the two other profiles, although all accounts are connected to each other. Friendica found my Diaspora account, but not the Hubzilla account, although someone from the friendica server has been following my Hubzilla account for months, not only the new account is connected to it.

About The Decentralized Network

Yesterday I signed up to friendica. I already have this account on Hubzilla and another one on Diaspora. I've just begun to explore friendica and thought it might be a good idea to take notes. Then I realized it may make sense to share these notes, because you probably all have contacts with users from the two other platforms and it may be interesting for you to see what they can and cannot do. Some things look confusing from the perspective of a another platform.

The most common odd thing Diaspora users will have seen is friendica users seemingly talking to themselves in the comments, when they are really replying to mastodon comments that are not federated to Diaspora.

I'm aware that there are differences between servers as well. Friendica and Hubzilla have lots of features the admin can install or not. Diaspora can be customized. From what I have seen pluspora looks quite different from the other Diaspora pods.

I can only write about my experience with the servers I have signed up to, of course. I'm merely a user, I don't have the expertise to run a server and therefore none of the services I write about. Since Hubzilla posts can be edited, I may do that from time to time when I learn something new.

No matter where you are on the network or if you are on it at all, you will be able to find the latest version of all notes on this topic with this link:

Well I've tried various ways, I've posted questions in Blogger forum about posts rss, I've search for this addon users manual and in #Friendica help file : no success.
* I cannot make one of my posts to bridge to my blog using the addon #Blogger :-|
* Nor can I get a post from my Blogger blog published into my own stream using rss :-|

Can anyone help me, point me in the right direction and/or let me know about help file or tutorials ?
Thanks in advance.

\#Friendica and fediverse.network what are these requests sent to a #Wordpress site? I mean, I don't know the contents of these files. If I try those requests in the referrer's site, most are none existent.

Test from #Friendica

Going to boost this from Mastodon. Curious if folks can see this.

It is not so difficult to connect to contacts in #diaspora or #mastodon or #friendica starting from #hubzilla....

The important thing is to know certain aspects:
-you need to find a hub/site that has plugins enabled
-it is necessary to install the apps

Take a look in this video ( in this case 2 diaspora and 1 mastodon):

Redis

!Friendica Support

Hi, I just wanted to confirm the correct procedure for sing Redis for caching. From what I can see in the default config file, I need to add the below lines:

// cache_driver (database|memcache|memcached|redis)
// Whether to use Memcache or Memcached or Redis to store temporary cache.
	'cache_driver' => 'redis',

// redis_host (String)
// Host name of the redis daemon.
	'redis_host' => '127.0.0.1',

// redis_port (String)
// Port number of the redis daemon.
	'redis_port' => 6379,

Is this correct? Do I also need to add the session_handler line? ie

// session_handler (database|cache|native)
// Whether to use Cache to store session data or to use PHP native session storage.
    'session_handler' => 'database',

Currently set to database. If I use Redis, then do I need to change this to 'cache'? Does 'native' refer to opcache?

Thanks for that quick answer @Michael Vogel !
Honnestly, that's one of the reasons I chose #libranet.de : the addon bridge to Blogger. I've completed the required fields as follows :
Bild/Foto
The two first fields are easy, the third one I don't know and didn't find any explanation in the #Friendica help nor in the ggl help or forums. Do you know of any user's manual for this addon or can you give me an explanation of this third field ?

Yes, I am also interested by the import of my blogger posts. I know how to construct my blogger rss but what do you mean by
then reshare it automatically via "remote self"

Social networks addon.

!Friendica Support
Dear all,
I maintain a #BloggerBlog about my ceramic work. I'd like to #export there some of the posts I generate in #Friendica. I've discovered there is an addon that is supposed to do that.
I believe I've completed the parameters that are request but I'm not sure I done it correctly. I have not found how to trigger that export for a specific post.
Yet, after exploring the #help info I haven't found any specific explanation and user instruction about this addon.
Could you please point me in the right direction ?

My Little Corner Of the Internet - Progress So Far...

All this on my 2 core 12gb ram VPS with 50gb SSD - although I may upgrade that to 100gb at some point.

Email
Bye Bye #Gmail... I have my own mail server, using K-9 Mail as a client on my phone, and the Nextcloud IMAP app on the web.

Website
I used to host my hillexplorer.com outdoors blog on shared hosting. Considering it's now on a not too expensive #VPS with various other apps, it's still much faster than it ever was on shared hosting - largely thanks to the Varnish caching system I installed.

File Storage
Bye Bye Google Drive. #Nextcloud is a much sleeker system and I'm rather loving it. I may not get as much storage space but, let's be honest, I never needed all that anyway! Mainly used for documents, compressed personal photos, and compressed personal videos that I can share with family. The original files are stored the old fashioned way.... on my hard drive and backed up to USB pens.

Google Docs
I'm now running my own instance of #Collabora Office on my server for editing my documents whilst out and about - integrated nicely with Nextcloud

Chat
#Prosody XMPP installed on my server and Conversations used as a client on the phone. Gajim on the PC. I don't currently use any other chat app.

Photo Gallery (public)
I used to use #Flickr for all my outdoors galleries for the walks I did. I'm now in the process of migrating them to #Piwigo at https://gallery.hillexplorer.com. I was a bit worried at first that it was going to look ugly but managed to find a nice theme.

Social Networking
#Friendica - the best option for me at the moment as I don't really want to cut off either Diaspora or Mastodon. It's a nice interface too and the mobile apps seem to be coming on well. #DiCa is my choice app at the moment. If only I could get this annoying embed problem sorted...

Music
Bye bye Google Music. I'm finding the Music app in Nexcloud works well and I have it linked up to the CloudBeats app on my phone.

Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc
All on Nextcloud and synced up nicely to my Android and my Ubuntu PC. Easy.

Future Stuff

Well... if you noticed, I never said bye bye #facebook. The reason for that is there's an outdoors community that just doesn't exist here in the #fediverse. I'm not sure if there's an answer for that... I mean, the Dark Peak walking community group I'm a member of has over 1000 members. here, there's me. I'm a lonely voice. What I have done is delete my old account and create a new one devoid of personal information. I share nothing personal about myself and post no personal photos. I simply use it for access to those communities that I'm a member of.

I'm also considering installing a small PeerTube instance so that I can migrate my few public videos away from YouTube.

I'm contemplating installing and having a dabble with Matrix.

I'm wondering if I could make use of Discourse.

I'm also looking at #Bitwarden password manager. More research needed on that one as - for obvious reasons - I'd need to be extremely sure of its security.

PixelFed also interests me. I've started an account on Pixelfex.social and would like to eventually host, but I'll probably wait until it's a bit more stable.

Since the last git pull on the Friendica rc a couple of days ago, the CPU usage of MariaDB seems to have rocketed and I'm regularly getting high load warnings. It should be said that I hadn't done a pull for a few weeks before that. Whatever it's doing, I thought it might have settled down by now.... are there any checks I can make or actions to take? @Friendica Support #friendica #mariadb

Few random questions running through my mind as I sit here watching my son play 'cut the rope'.

Is #pleroma #activitypub only or can it communicate with diaspora?

How does #friendica compare with #hubzilla in terms of resource usage... ie impact on system load. I'm thinking along the line of single user instances here.

Are there any tweaks that can be made to friendica to make it 'lighter' if only used as a single user instance?

Are friendica and hubzilla the only 2 systems that are capable of full communication with both diaspora and mastodon?

I have to admit, I've been tempted by the claims of being ultra lightweight by pleroma, but I wouldn't want to lose the ability to communicate with diaspora

Again I would like to apologize for the longer duration of the reboot last Friday, but it seems the performance is much better now, the queue of #Friendica is much shorter now than before and it gets completed fast as well.

Could we add some suggested php extensions in Install.md?

I did not know that it is strongly recommended to use "sysvsem" and "memcached" which I learned during the #35c3.
Is that extensions that you have enabled or have those been enabled by default?

I am not sure where to add that information and how much explaination would be reasonable to add with it.

Also other extensions needed are "imagick", "curl", "gd", "iconv", "mysqli" and "pdo_mysql". Maybe there is more, let me know!

I think this would make setting up #Friendica easier for beginners and it would avoid to run it without all suggested extensions.

I would add the information to the file, let me know what you think and leave any comment that comes to mind here.

Can't read comments from Hubzilla

!Friendica Support

I was reading this post https://squeet.me/display/adb58850f9b901363d0c005056264835 yesterday and noted that I couldn't read the comments made by a Hubzilla user (giavec@zotum.net). A friend here told me he could read it from his Libranet.de account so I was wondering if this a problem on the squeet.me server.

#Friendica #Hubzilla #problem

On /login in a mobile browser I cannot select the user name field. I think that the friendica logo is blocking the field.

Check here: https://social.yl.ms/login

I think there is some change needed. Is this #Friendica or #Frio related?

During a #Friendica update I get this:
Warning: The lock file is not up to date with the latest changes in composer.json. You may be getting outdated dependencies. Run update to update them.

There is no composer.json anymore, shouldn't there be one?

PHP Errors

!Friendica Support

On the latest RC (pulled earlier today), I decided to take a little look at the PHP log. Not sure how much help any of it is. I've looked at the last 10000 lines, which doesn't take me back any earlier than todays date. The vast majority are the third error listed below. All lines are made up of just the following four. I'm on php7.2 by the way.

This error probably isn't very helpful as I'm not sure what triggered it and I'm struggling to replicate it.

[13-Jan-2019 17:21:15 Europe/London] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Friendica\Network\HTTPException\InternalServerErrorException: '' is not a fully qualified URL, please use App->internalRedirect() instead in /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/Core/System.php:276
Stack trace:

#1 /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/LegacyModule.php(69): toggle_mobile_init(Object(Friendica\App))
#2 /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/LegacyModule.php(39): Friendica\LegacyModule::runModuleFunction('init')
#3 [internal function]: Friendica\LegacyModule::init()
#4 /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/App.php(1730): call_user_func(Array)

same with this one...

[13-Jan-2019 15:13:42 Europe/London] PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/Model/GContact.php on line 743

This one I'm getting all the time... the log is full of them, virtually every minute, sometimes lot's of times per minute

[13-Jan-2019 17:22:32 Europe/London] PHP Warning: Error while sending STMT_PREPARE packet. PID=12978 in /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/Database/DBA.php on line 457

This one I'm getting fairly regularly but can't quite work out what's triggering it. It seems to happen sometimes when I reload my profile page

[13-Jan-2019 17:25:58 Europe/London] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 198335608 bytes) in /var/www/mass-trespass.uk/html/src/Util/JsonLD.php on line 109

Next step is taking a look at the friendica log....

So I added the activitypub plugin for my Wordpress site and proceeded to get very excited. I'm supposed to be able to follow via hillexplorer@hillexplorer.com but unfortunately am getting the message 'network type could not be detected' when trying to add. The webfinger test appears to pass ok though...

@fediverse@libranet.de #Fediverse #friendica Is anyone body out there?

.. I really liked Squirrelmail on one of the websites I used to run. .No idea how it has evolved or if it is still around though.
I decided "long ago" to get a shared hosting in Iceland (quite good laws there) to host my own email and by the way some website (phpBB boards - an own #friendica instance).
These days i think that's the way to go.
I guess that's the only way to be aware of any request that is issued "by the law" and also you get away of all the bad aspects of those commercial mass hosters like gmail/hotmail and so on.

My hoster used squirrel, right now they offer #roundcube or #squirrelmail, to access use GNUlinux/thunderbird or the respective app on android ..

When I try and attach a webpage from my site then look at the preview, it only displays the title but not an image or description. The bbcode looks correct and is below. I've had this issue for a while and is a feature that I'd really like... any ideas?
